The Federated Aerosol Network, December 2015

Below is a current (as of December, 2015) map of the Federated Aerosol Network (FANtastic!).

Some network updates since March 2014 (date of last newsletter):

• The AMF site in in Manacapuro, Brazil (MAO on the network map) is ending its operations after ~ 2 years of measurements.
• The AMY site ended its operations after ~ 5 years of measurements. The instruments were transferred to a site in Seoul and are now part of the SEL site and continue to be a collaboration with NOAA. There are still aerosol optical measurements being made at AMY, however, they are maintained by a different group within KMA and are not a collaboration with NOAA.
• CGO (Cape Grim, Australia) started using the NOAA db system and editing software in November 2015. Their historic data are also being ingested into the database - this will simplify submission to EBAS. Additionally, in the near future, the plan is for the Australian Gunn Point (GPA) observatory measurements to transition to NOAA software for data collection, editing and archiving.
• TIK (Tiksi, Russia) previously only used NOAA software to ingest aethalometer data. Now, in addition to that, the Finnish Meteorological Institute's (FMI) nephelometer and MAAP data are being ingested into the NOAA database system. The data are being ingested into the NOAA database system for data analysis and aethalometer data QC.

Non-network collaborations

• The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland, under the leadership of Nicolas Bukowieki, has modified the NOAA software for use with their four CATCOS stations. The software modifications they have made include bypassing the NOAA database so that the data go directly to a database at PSI. They maintain this system with minimal interaction with NOAA.
• The NOAA aerosol group has also collaborated with the Chinese Meterological Agency in the set up and analysis of the Linan humidograph system (see Zhang et al., 2015, on the publications list).

This table describes the current suite of aerosol instrumentation at each federated aerosol network site.
