Sourish Basu is a research scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, working in the Carbon Cycle and Greenhouse Gases group at NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML). He is an atmospheric inverse modeler, and infers surface fluxes of various greenhouse gases by interpreting GMD’s atmospheric measurements of those gases through an atmospheric transport model. His projects include:

• Estimating CO₂ sources and sinks using surface and satellite estimates of atmospheric CO₂ mole fractions, and separating fossil fuel from biospheric and oceanic fluxes by using the isotopologue ¹⁴CO₂.
• Estimating biomass burning using in situ and satellite estimates of atmospheric CO mole fractions, and using those estimates to separate biospheric CO2 fluxes into contributions from fires and ecosystem exchange.
• Estimating CH₄ fluxes using in situ and satellite estimates of atmospheric CH₄ mole fractions, and partitioning them into different source types using the isotopologue ¹³CH₄.
• Improving the methodology behind surface flux inversions by exploring and adapting new techniques developed in other communities.

Sourish obtained his PhD in physics in 2009 from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, after which he worked as a post-doctoral associate at the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research in Utrecht, The Netherlands for four years. He joined GML in 2013 initially as a post-doctoral fellow sponsored by the National Research Council, and joined CIRES full time in 2014.
