Balloons with radiosondes and ozonesondes have been launched from Lauder since 1986 with the cooperation of New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). Since August 2004 monthly payloads have included NOAA FPHs, ozonesondes and radiosondes. NOAA GML supplies everything necessary for these flights at Lauder, including helium and balloons, then NIWA personnel prepare the payloads and launch them.

Thanks to the Lauder staff of NIWA for their efforts in launching our water vapor sondes!

Our water vapor measurements in New Zealand are supported by NOAA’s U.S. Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Program and NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Program.
